Volunteer Fire Department Receives Big Donation

They went from having nearly nothing to fight fires, to having $30,000 to buy new equipment. That's how much the Jackson Heights Volunteer Fire Department received, thanks to a donation from Allied Waste Services. The company saw reports in the media about the department's lack of emergency gear and immediately wanted to make a difference. "I spoke with my manager and I think the conversation took about 5 seconds. I suggested we needed to help the Jackson Heights Fire Department and the manager said 'Let's go, let's do it!' and so we got involved pretty quickly," says Bob Cox, Allied Waste Services General Manager.

The money will be used to buy hoses, ladders and even concrete, so they can build a new driveway to keep from leaving the department in the mud.
