Long-Time Judge Retires on Birthday

A retirement celebration for one of the longest sitting judges in Texas. And today was also his birthday.

Judge Jack Holland of Henderson County has presided over the 173rd District Court for more than 35 years.

The party in his courtroom just wrapped up this afternoon. The judge remembered his many years on the bench and shared his thoughts on where he sees the Texas legal system going in the future.

"When you compare it to the other states, Texas is known as sort of the hard state on criminals," he said. "I think that will be less so as we go along and become more tolerant of other people's ideas and opinions. I hope we always remember the rights that were given to us a long ago in the Constitution."

Judge Holland says he has no definite plans yet. He'll take a few weeks off and then he may become a visiting judge or a lawyer.
