Grace Community To Add Football

First, it was TK Gorman, then Brook Hill, then All Saints.  Now, Grace Community School in Tyler is becoming the fourth private school in East Texas to start a football program. The school made the announcement at a press conference this afternoon. They also introduced their new head coach. He is former Tatum assistant coach Tim Truman. Truman also has experience starting a football program, helping do so at Southwestern Assembly of God University in 2000.

"All of those experiences that I brought with me from that have led me to believe more everyday that the foundation and the way in which they established this program will lead to it's ultimate success," said Truman.

Head Administrator Jay Ferguson said the move of soccer from a fall sport to a spring sport was a big reason why Grace decided to add football.  But, it was the prospect of developing integrity and character in young men that sealed the deal.

"Kids grow under pressure," said Ferguson.  "We all grow under pressure when we face adverse times. And, while football and athletics are artificial pressure, they're pressure nonetheless. So there's tremendous opportunity for growth from young men here."

Grace plans to use this fall as a developmental season.  They will then add a junior high and JV team in 2006, a varsity team with an independent schedule in 2007, then a full Tapps 5A varsity team in 2008.

The John Tyler Lions always seem to look sharp in their uniforms. But thanks to East Texas lawyer Keith Miller, the Lions will look better and play safer. Helmets that advertise lowering the impact of hits, and possibly reduce the amount of concussions, come with a hefty price-tag. Miller's donation of 7,500 dollars, will go to help the lions cover that cost. "Keith Miller's been a big sponsor of John Tyler High School football program for years now.  I know it's...More >>

The last time we talked about the Kilgore Bulldogs, quarterback Buddy Jackson and wide receiver Jonathan Shepherd were apart of the 800-meter relay team that won gold at the 2017 state track meet. But today they are back in the pads, and looking to turn their speed into touchdowns.  Competing in District 9-4A, Kilgore has always had a strong run game that helped them become the 2016 District Champs.
