Former "American Idol" Contestant Performs For Troops

A former American Idol contestant from Kilgore has just returned from New York City.

Lana Phillips sang for 5,000 sailors, marines, and coast guards during "Fleet Weeks' Annual Thank You to the Troops."

Lana performed on the USS Intrepid, a retired World War II ship that's now an air and space museum.

Her songs included a single dedicated to the troops, called "Safe and Sound."

"When I was on stage, the lights were really bright, so I couldn't see everybody. I could barely see anybody," she said. "But there were a bunch of people there, so it was just nice to be able to sing that song for people who could relate to it."

Lana was among the top 73 Idol contestants during season 2 of the show. Her debut album is scheduled for release in August.
