Harleton Beats District Rival Union Hill For State Berth

Union Hill won a coin flip to play one game instead of a three game series for the 1A Region II championship against District 21-A rival Harleton.  Now, they're probably wishing they hadn't.  The Wildcats came from behind to beat the Bulldogs 4-3 this afternoon in Hallsville.

Wildcats freshman first baseman Colton Knuckols hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at three.  A Ross Hollon sack fly in the bottom of the sixth gave them the lead, and relief pitcher Troy Lyons got a backwards "K" to end the game in the seventh.

"Every time we needed to this year, someone is always there to give us that big hit," said Lyons.  "This time it was Colton Knuckols."

"We played em back and we beat em by one," said Knuckols, "and the next time they beat us by one [for a co-district championship].  Then, we beat 'em by one again [today] so I'll count that as a district championship."

"I've been in this about 20 years," said Harleton head coach Jackie Lloyd, "and I've never made it to the state tournament before.  It's the second time for Harleton to make it there.  They did it back in the 80's with Coach Ebarb, and I'm just proud to be going."

Harleton will play Wednesday in the state semifinals at Dell Diamond in Round Rock.  The opponent and time are still to be determined.  If they win, they would play Thursday at Dell Diamond at 2:00 for the state championship.
