District Rivals Play For State Berth

Co-district champs, meeting up for a chance to go to the state baseball tournament.  It's a dream scenario, and it's about to happen this weekend. District 21A rivals Harleton and Union Hill will play a one game 1A Region II final to see who will represent East Texas in Austin. This is the third time in the last four years that two team from district 21A have met for the right to go to state.

"You got to play the best to be the best," said Harleton head coach Jackie Lloyd, "so if we can beat them in one game we deserve to go. Both of the teams have a lot of respect for each other and I think they'll both play hard."

"Both teams won at their place," said Union Hill head coach Dean Fitzner. "Both games were one run games, so it'll be an even matchup, so in a sense, this'll be a three game series right here. Winner take all."

"I just hope we come out on top," said Union Hill junior pitcher Shawn Hayes. "Supposed to be braggin rights if we win. Real district champions."

"We figured we'd play them, because we're the best two teams in this region by far," said Harleton senior pitcher Daniel Martin. "It's pretty good to meet up again, especially in this area. That game is going to be packed."

That one game playoff is scheduled for Saturday at 2:00 in Hallsville.
