EAST TEXAS (KLTV) - President-elect Donald Trump is already setting the agenda for the legislative branch – specifically Congress - and he hasn't been sworn in yet.
Earlier this week, Congress was ready to vote on reducing funding for the Office of Congressional Ethics, which monitors conduct of congressional members. This office is charged with checking the behavior of our congressmen and has the power to investigate potential conflicts of interest and wrongdoing.
It is ridiculous that Congress would tee this up as the first point of action for the new year and brand new members of Congress and Trump seem to agree. This seems like a no-brainer for Congress and its leaders, but it did nothing but bolster the image of Trump and his pledge to drain the swamp. It also shows that the leaders of the House of Representatives are either fearful or deeply respect the president-elect and the power of his tweets.
This truly is a new year. Now, whether it will be a new productive year is yet to be seen but this move by Congress reinforces what many Americans believe about the institution and it reinforces the belief that many Americans have in Trump. It is still early but Trump seems to have Congress on its heels and against the ropes and he may get all he asks for through his first few years.
Either way, there is movement in D.C. and that makes the government more effective and makes for a Better East Texas.
