Better East Texas: Obama family should refrain from criticizing Trump

EAST TEXAS (KLTV) - I saw some of the sound bites from Oprah Winfrey's interview with Michelle Obama and it is not impressive.

Mrs. Obama has been held up by many as a solid First Lady who has advanced several important initiatives including Let's Move, improving school lunches and advancing education for girls and minorities. But in her interview with Oprah she says she feels hopeless after this November election.

Specifically, she said she now knows what it feels not to have any hope. And, of course, Oprah nodded in agreement.

Now you can't help but connect that she is suggesting that Donald Trump's administration will lead America into a hopeless state or that we are already in a hopeless state. Mrs. Obama has a huge field of influence and the fact that she has told her constituents that she is hopeless will only breed hatred and distrust for the Donald Trump administration. So much of our national wiring is based on emotion.

On the flip side of the coin, the stock market is very emotional and is showing enthusiasm for the Trump victory. Ultimately, there will continue to be many that will be influenced by the Obamas and you have to hope – yes inserting hope – that they will tone down the rhetoric or at least go silent on criticizing the next president.

We saw that from the Bushes and it is reasonable to expect it from the Obamas. Humility and grace during this transition will make for a Better East Texas.
