Teen Drowns In Lake Hawkins

Joel Avellaneda, 13, died late this afternoon. He drowned in the swimming area of Lake Hawkins in Wood County.

Avellaneda was there with a couple dozen fellow church members, who say they're from Tyler's Manantiales de Vida.

The boy's parents were notified, and they arrived shortly after divers found their son's body.

Witnesses say there were a lot of people in the water at the time, but no one knew Avellaneda was missing until it was too late.

"It turned out that the kid was inside the buoys with everyone, and no one saw him or anything," Eric Baker, a nearby swimmer, said. "And they tried to help him, but they couldn't find him. It's too deep."

The park manager says the water is at least eight feet deep, and Avellaneda was near the edge of the swimming area, where there's a drop-off and a stronger current.

The sheriff says the teen likely got fatigued.
