TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

If Patrick Mahomes II decides to declare for the NFL draft in the coming weeks, Texas Tech won't be left high and dry. No, replacing the Whitehouse product won't be easy. After all Mahomes leads the country in passing yards, total offense, and touchdowns. But, another East Texan is next in line to lead the Red Raiders.

Former Gilmer Buckeye McLane Carter is headed to Lubbock to play for head coach Kliff Kingsbury. Despite throwing for nearly 4,000 yards, 47 touchdowns and leading Gilmer to a state title in 2014, Carter wasn't heavily recruited.

The quarterback spent one season at Incarnate Word before coming back to East Texas and playing for Tyler Junior College this past year. After leading the nation in passing yards per game, the lefty was named the MVP of the the Southwest Conference.

With three years of eligibility left, Carter is now determined to make a name for himself in the Big 12.
