Tom Ray describes himself as a "nineteen year-old skinny kid" when he joined the Marine Corps in 1951. The Korean War was in full swing by then and within the year Ray was sent to Korea. Although Ray has four battle stars for his service in Korea he was only wounded once. But he lost his best friend in battle and saw so many others killed and maimed. Ray served in the Marines until 1954, and although he continues to follow the action in Iraq, his television set more often is playing video of "The Country Classics", a music group he performs with at nursing homes and for other occasions throughout East Texas. Tom Ray says he's proud to have served his country, but in the broader scheme of things, he'd be glad to trade a rifle for a guitar most any day.
