TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

Press Release

The No. 3-ranked UT Tyler women’s basketball team suffered a 67-66 loss to Sul Ross in its American Southwest Conference opener on Thursday at the Gallego Center.

The Patriots (5-1, 0-1 ASC) had a 32-game conference and 21-game regular-season winning streak end with the defeat to the Lobos (4-1, 1-0 ASC) who hit 14 3-pointers and shot 46.9 percent from the field in the game to pull off the upset. UT Tyler, which owned a 19-3 advantage to start the game, hit eight 3-pointers but would take its first loss of the season after Michelle Obach’s last-second jumper missed the mark as the buzzer sounded in the first ASC loss for the Patriots since Dec. 6, 2014 against UT Dallas. The Patriots went 15-0 in ASC play last season.

Obach led the Patriots with 15 points after hitting three 3-pointers and 5-for-14 from the field. She would also add five assists and five rebounds, while D’Onna Matthews had 12 points and a team-leading seven rebounds. Matthews had all 12 of her points on a 6-for-7 shooting performance in the first half but would go 0-for-6 in the second half. Demi Cumby contributed nine points off the bench and Dia Evans added eight points and three rebounds. Makenzi May would hit two 3-pointers in the game to finish with six points and Samantha Odom had four with one 3-pointer.

UT Tyler jumped out to a big lead in the game and were up 19-3 after Cumby hit a 3-pointer and jumper on back-to-back possessions. The Lobos responded though with two quick 3-pointers and went to the second half down 23-9 and were able to take a 28-27 lead over the Patriots with five minutes on the clock when Katy Boren hit a 3-pointer. UT Tyler would take a 38-36 halftime lead and were up 56-53 after 30 minutes of play.

A 3-pointer from Odom gave the Patriots a 59-53 lead with eight minutes to play but an Ellyn Avery 3-pointer capped an 8-0 run that had the Lobos up two with 4:38 to play. A May 3-pointer with 4:10 stopped the run and gave the Patriots a 62-61 lead but a pair of Kenya Miles layups and had Sul Ross up two. UT Tyler would get two free throws from Obach to cut the lead to one with 1:08 remaining, but the Patriots would miss their final three shots of the game to fall.

The Patriots owned a 30-18 scoring advantage in the paint and a 12-3 margin in second-chance points, but the 3-point script flip was too much to overcome. Katy Boren led the Lobos with 15 points and five 3-pointers, while Lindsey Hearn had 13 points on four treys. Three more from Ellyn Avery and two from Hannah Carr lifted the Lobos to the win and snapped the impressive streaks by the Patriots.

UT Tyler will return to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Howard Payne in the Brownwood Coliseum. This will be the second meeting of the season between the two teams with the Patriots earning a 79-75 non-conference win over the YellowJackets last Wednesday. The two teams played for the ASC Championship last season with UT Tyler earning a 77-70 win in the finals.
