SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

A Smith County jury sentenced a Tyler man to life in prison for the aggravated sexual assault of a child.

According to Smith County Criminal District Attorney Kenneth Biggs, Calvin Tyson Arnold, 37, was arrested in July 2016 by U.S. Marshals. A victim made an outcry seven years after the aggravated sexual assault occurred, Biggs said. The victim was 9 years old at the time of the assault.

The trial began on Monday, November 28 in the 114th District Court. The verdict was reached Thursday afternoon, and the sentence was handed down around 5 p.m.

The normal punishment range for this charge is between 5 years to life in prison. However, since Arnold had a previous conviction and served time for injury to a child, the punishment range was 15 years to life. Arnold was sentenced to life.
