TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

The holidays can be a hard time for some East Texas seniors.

That is why volunteers with Meals on Wheels Ministries of East Texas is stepping-up to help deliver some special gifts. The Santas for Seniors program is back for a fifth year and is collecting items like jackets, blankets, even small heaters for those in need.

MOWMET volunteer Diane Vandenberg also makes some of the gifts clients on her delivery route. She explained how long it takes to make her items.

"If you're talking about an Afghan, that takes 200 hours to make, that's a lot of work and scarves, hats, mittens, shoes, on the average maybe two to three days," Vandenberg said.

She said the reaction from those receiving the gifts is worth the time commitment.

"They do tell me thank you and after I see them probably this week, they'll be really excited," Vandenberg said.

Santas for Seniors drop boxes can be found at participating Starbucks locations or the Meals on Wheels Ministries offices around East Texas. Collections end December 16.
