Local Cosmetologists Angry About Fines

East Texas hair stylists and barbers are furious about the way they are being treated by the Texas Board of Cosmetology. They're angry because they've received fines for non-sanitary violations like not having their hours posted on their mirrors.

In the past, these violations were warnings, but now there are several hundred dollar fines. The rules changed in January, but the stylists weren't notified about the changes. In fact, the new guidelines were just reprinted on Friday. The board has agreed to lower the fines by 75 percent, but many say it is not enough. "It is too little too late," says stylist Patricia Ward.

"They said they could not afford to send out noticies and that everything is now a monetary fine. I have to abide by rules I know nothing about. That is not fair," says Rona Lacey.

Several stylist are now joining forces to fight the changes made by the cosmotolgy board. They are creating the East Texas Association of Salon Service Providers. For more information, call 903-245-8037.
