Compromisers Still Trying To Strike A Deal Ahead of Critical Judgeship Votes

In Washington, the clock is ticking down to the so-called "nuclear option."

A dozen senators are racing the clock to forge a deal that would prevent a showdown over President Bush's judicial nominees. But a compromise remains beyond the grasp of the negotiators.

South Carolina Republican Lindsey Graham tells C-N-N: "We are running out of time."

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist has given Democrats an ultimatum: Stand aside and allow an up-or-down vote on Bush's nominees or prepare for an end to filibusters on such nominees.

Democrats have refused to go along. They insist that the filibuster be preserved as a check on the rights of the Senate minority.

Frist's timetable calls for critical votes on one nominee, Texas Supreme Court Justice Priscilla Owen, to be cast Tuesday and Wednesday.
