Public Gets Sneak Peek Of Mineola Nature Preserve

A group of nature lovers is turning 3,000 acres of land into a nature preserve.

Today only, they opened the Mineola Nature Preserve on the Sabine River for the public to get a sneak peek.

For the next several months, volunteers will enhance the preserve with walking trails, fishing and camp grounds, exhibit areas, and kayaking on the Sabine River. Friends of the Preserve say it's perfect for people who like to watch wildlife.

"We have almost 300 varieties of birds on our bird list. And that'll be out for publication very soon," Sandy Tibbs, chair of Friends of the Preserve, said. "And a lot of wildlife out here. We were out one day and actually heard some wild turkey. So we know they're here. A lot of deer and just every critter you can expect to see in East Texas."

Friends of the Preserve say they plan to officially open the park this fall.
