Tyler Soldier Returns Home

"Nothing's guaranteed until you're on the plane flying home," says U.S. Coast Guardsman Eric Boulware about coming back home. "So I told [my family] this is the date I'm flying home and it changed about 4 or 5 times." But for Boatswainsmate 1st class Coast Guardsman, the welcome he received at the Tyler Airport was worth the wait. His wife of 8 years and 2 kids were the first to greet him at the terminal. Boulware has spent the last nine months in Bahrain patrolling oil ports in the Arabian Gulf. This assignment overseas was unexpected and it came with its sacrifices. "I missed my wife and both kids' birthdays, anniversaries. I'm actually able to be here for my daughter's birthday which is on the 23rd of this month but I'll be in school in South Carolina for my son's birthday which is on July 4th," says Boulware. He did everything he could to make the best of his time away from family including taking pictures of the country and collecting coins he exchanged with coast guardsmen from other countries. But the best morale boost is hearing his family say he was missed. "Because he's been in Bahrain for a long time," says Boulware's 6-year-old son Kaden. "Yeah mommy was crying and daddy was crying," says his 3-year-old daughter Eliza. Boulware doesn't expect to be called overseas again. He'll begin creating new memories with his young family to make up for the time he has missed.
