GREGG COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

An Illinois man was killed in a wreck on I-20 in Gregg County Wednesday morning.

Officials with the Highway Patrol say 77-year-old Amando Vega of Chicago, Illinois was killed in the early morning collision near Mile Marker 590.

Around 1:22 a.m., troopers responded to a wreck involving an 18-wheeler hauling bags of cattle feed and passenger vehicle on Interstate 20 near the Highway 259/31 exit.

The preliminary crash investigation says an 18-wheeler was traveling in the eastbound outside lane of I-20 when a 2002 Mazda Protege entered the outside lane from the shoulder, just in front of the semi truck.

The 18-wheeler struck the Mazda knocking it into the guard rail. The vehicle rebounded into the outside lane becoming trapped between the cab of the truck and its towed trailer. The Mazda and the truck's trailer caught fire. Both vehicles came to rest on the eastbound shoulder of the highway.

Vega was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the semi truck, identified as 62-year-old, Melvin Edwards of Shreveport was taken to Good Shepard Medical Center where he was treated and released.

The highway has been re-opened and traffic is back to normal through the area.
