Citing competition, economy, Brookshire's announces layoff of 85 people

The Brookshire Grocery Company confirmed Tuesday that their workforce will be decreased by dozens of employees.

In a statement Tuesday, Communications Manager Ellen Reynolds said that due to significant competitive pressures and unfavorable economic conditions, there will be a workforce reduction within the company. Approximately 85 people will be affected, Reynolds said, impacting corporate, manufacturing, and logistics areas within the company.

Some of those impacted will be the employees within the company's bakery manufacturing plant operation, which supplies baked goods to the individual Brookshire's stores, Reynolds said.

Reynolds said that there should not be any impact to the company's approximately 14,400 employees in retail and other support functions.
She added that the employees who will be affected by the layoff will receive severance pay and transition assistance.
