Car Bomb Kills 17 In Baghdad

A car bomb exploded near a market in eastern Baghdad. At least six people have been killed and more than one dozen were injured. The blast sparked fires in the area and destroyed ten nearby cars. The detonation of the parked car killed at least 17 people and wounded 65. A nearby apartment was also set on fire.

Two car bombs also went off today in the northern city of Kirkuk, killing at least two people. One of the blasts was near a Shiite mosque and that's where the victims died. A second car bomb went off as experts were disabling a roadside bomb that had been found.

Meanwhile in Baghdad, two security officials were assassinated in separate attacks as they drove to work. A brigadier-general with the defense ministry, and a colonel with the interior ministry were both shot to death. Yesterday, a series of bombings killed nearly 70 people.

A wave of bombs and gunfire killed at least 69 people and wounded 160 Wednesday - pushing the death toll from insurgent violence to more than 400 in less than two weeks.
