All Saints To Add Football

Another East Texas private school is set to turn on the Friday night lights. All Saints Episcopal School in Tyler announced today they plan to begin playing football in 2006. That new coach was introduced today by school headmaster Arthur Burke. Mark Ackerman has accepted the challenge of starting the program from scratch. He'll also serve as the schools Dean of Students. The chaplain for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and youth minister for his Florida church turned around a struggling Parkview Christian Academy in Waco a few years ago. While facing a big challenge, Ackerman remains optimistic.

"We have great athletes on the campus," Ackerman said. "That doesn't mean they'll be great football players, but it does mean that we have a good base to start working with."

That athletic base includes a baseball team headed to the state tournament this Thursday. Ackerman jokingly said he still hasn't seen an offensive lineman on campus, but does plan to run a wide open offense.
