East Texas Women Honored

Three East Texans are honored for helping our community. Each year, the Junior League of Tyler, Inc. recognizes outstanding members for their commitment to volunteering.

On May 9 at the League's annual dinner, Andy Dixon was presented the "Mahala Young Award." "I am shocked and honored to have been chosen," said a very humble Dixon. She was selected based on her years of service and commitment to our community. She has gone above and beyond her service duties fellow League members say. She also serves on numerous school and community boards. She described as a very dedicated and committed volunteer.

Caroline Ross was also honored. She received the "Gertrude Windsor Award." Even after leaving the Junior League, she continued volunteering and helping the East Texas community. She's described as having a real spirit for helping others.

John Tyler Senior Julia Basurto was named "Outstanding Young Volunteer" and awarded a $3500 scholarship. Among other things, she was recognized for helping the Hispanic community. "To be able to help other people to learn English, as well I did. I'm still learning the language but to be able to help them, and to make them feel strong and confident to speak and read and all those things, it breaks my heart," says Julia. It was just four years ago that Julia herself only spoke Spanish. She now also speaks fluent English. She was recognized for her academic achievements as well as her community service.
