To make this tasty fall dessert takes a few simple steps, and the result is a delicious and cute-as-a-button dessert your family and guests will enjoy. (And you'll enjoy the fall scents that will fill your home as the apples caramelize in cinnamon!)
Apple Pie Trifles

Four large Granny Smith apples, washed, cored, and sliced thin
1 teaspoon cinnamon
3 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons salted butter
One package of refrigerated pie crust (or make your own)
Mixture of 1 teaspoon cinnamon and 4 tablespoons granulated sugar
room temperature (or melted) butter
2 cups heavy cream
2/3 cup powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
Caramel sauce - I use Ghirardelli
1. Heat a 10 inch skillet over medium heat, and add 2 tablespoons salted butter. Allow butter to warm and begin to foam.
2. When foaming calms down, add the apple slices, and sprinkle in the cinnamon and brown sugar. Allow to cook for as long as needed to caramelize the sugar and to soften the apples, turning frequently, lowering heat as needed so as not to burn the sugar. When tender, set aside to cool.
3. Prepare the pastry strips: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, or use a nonstick sheet. Roll out pastry dough on a sheet of parchment paper to about 1/4 inch thickness, and coat with oom temperature butter. Sprinkle with mixture of cinnamon and sugar. Use a pizza cutter or the tip of a sharp knife to cut dough into strips. Slide parchment back onto the baking sheet, and bake until pastry strips are golden brown and puffed, about 12 minutes. (may vary by oven)
4.. Prepare whipped cream: Pour the heavy cream into a mixer bowl. Attach the whisk attachment to mixer, and begin to whip the cream. As it whips, add the powdered sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon. When it is desired consistency, turn off mixer, and set aside.
5. Assemble: in a small Mason jar or other dessert dish, layer a few crumbled pieces of the baked pastry, whipped cream, slightly warm apples, another crumble of pastry, more apples, and top with whipped cream. Use another strip of pastry to decorate the top, as desired. Sprinkle with a bit cinnamon, if desired.
