Three Killed, Including Two Children, In I-20 Accident

Three people are dead including two children after a head-on collision on a rain slick highway.
It happened Wednesday morning around 8:45 on Interstate 20, not far from the Highway 110 exit.
DPS troopers said a red pick up truck was driving westbound when it hydroplaned and skidded across the grassy median into oncoming traffic. It then slammed into an 18-wheeler.

Officials said 30-year-old Vicky Garza, her three-year-old daughter, Jackie, and a 13-year-old passenger, Susana Cuevas, all of Smith County, were killed.
An adult passenger and a child were taken by helicopter to ETMC. Both were listed in stable condition Wednesday afternoon.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was able to walk away from the crash. Off-duty Deputy Constable Tommy Goodman witnessed the accident and called for help.

"Looked to me like they just hydroplaned," Tommy said. "They were on their breaks when they went through the median., and they went through so quick the 18-wheeler didn't even have time to react."

Officials said the fatal crash was also a factor in a one vehicle rollover just yards from the other crash scene.

Officials suspect onlooking and slick roads caused the rollover. The driver was not hurt.
