England Sentencing Phase To Start

Private-First-Class Lynndie England has admitted she made a mistake. Now she hopes to minimize her punishment.

A sentencing hearing for England begins today in Fort Hood, Texas.

She pleaded guilty yesterday to seven counts of mistreating prisoners, saying she let her comrades talk her into going along with the abuse.

The charges carry a maximum of eleven years in prison. However, prosecutors and the defense have reached an agreement that limits the sentence to a shorter term, the length of which is not known.

A military jury of officers and senior enlisted soldiers will convene today to determine England's sentence.

The photographs of England smiling with thumbs-up poses made her the face of the prisoner abuse case at Abua Ghraib in Iraq.
