Zoo Unveils Wild Bird Walkabout

A new exhibit at Tyler's Caldwell Zoo lets you get up close and personal with more than 200 birds.

The Wild Bird Walkabout just opened today. One-hundred-fifty parakeets and 50 cockatiels fly freely in the aviary. Visitors can buy feed sticks with seeds for a dollar each and interact with the birds.

The exhibit is already a hit with the kids.

"It was pretty cool," Dylan Richardson, 6, said.

"I really think the idea was to be able to get the up-close-and-personal experience," Yvonne Stainback, a curator, said. "So we don't have any other exhibits besides the petting pen that you actually get in with the animals and are able to walk around and have them fly around you and be able to feed them."

The zoo plans to add 150 more parakeets in the next few weeks.

Caldwell Zoo is open daily from 9:30 a.m.-6 p.m.
