Cowboys Camp: Rookies must earn star; Linebackers look to step up

Rookies on the Cowboys have to earn their star. Rookies on the Cowboys have to earn their star.
OXNARD, CA (KLTV) -

From bringing sandwiches to mini camp to carrying a bunch of helmets off the field, rookies on the Cowboys and every team for that matter are treated a little different. It just part of life in the NFL. Dallas head coach Jason Garrett though takes the rookie initiation one step further.

But its not in a bad way. Throughout mini camp and training camp, both the drafted and un-drafted rookies do not have a star on their helmet like the other players.

And yes that does apply to fourth overall pick Ezekiel Elliott. The running back along with his other first year teammates have to make the 53 man roster in order to earn the star, and its actually a process the former Buckeye went through in college.

"Back at Ohio State we kind of had to do something like that," Elliott said. "We had to start out camp with a black stripe on our helmet and throughout camp we had to prove ourselves. It's kind of like walking into manhood so it is the same type of initiation, we have to come out and prove ourselves to the team."
