EAST TEXAS (KLTV) - Recently, much of what we hear in the news is about political collisions, but I wanted to take a minute and talk about a potential collision much closer to home.
And that is the collision of local drivers and the start of school. August is a month many school-age kids dread as it is when summer comes to a close and back to school schedules get in full gear. But you don't have to look far for potential safety issues with our kids getting to and from the school campus.
First of all is that school zones are, or will be, up and running. While some view these as speed traps, they are there because children will cross the street at some point – so please be extra vigilant when in a school zone.
Next, is the fact that school buses will be lumbering down the road as well. Every year our news team reports on vehicle collisions with school buses. Drivers must pay more attention because bus stops are frequent and yes, you need to stop even when you are on the other side of the road.
Finally, is the infusion of inexperienced drivers making their way to school. They are inexperienced and it shows. They are not used to heavy stop-and-go traffic and can be a hazard themselves. The bottom line is that we have multiple wildcards that can cause collisions just because school is starting back.
If you travel through school zones and around school campuses, be aware, it can mean the difference in your life and the life of a student nearby.
