OXNARD, CA (KLTV) -

Back in the 1960's, the Cowboys were the first team to sign college basketball players and turn them into NFL players. In fact, Dallas' 1975 Super Bowl team had three former college basketball players on its roster.

Fast forward to 2016 and the Cowboys are still giving guys from the hardwood a chance. Dallas recently drafted former Baylor Bear Rico Gathers in the sixth round. The power forward turned tight end hasn't played a down a football since middle school, but was intrigued by the idea and declared for the draft after his junior campaign.

Needless to say, Gathers is worth watching in practice and especially when Dallas takes on the Rams in its first preseason game on Saturday.

"I wanted to challenge myself and do something out of the ordinary," Gathers said. "I wanted to dedicate myself to what I used to love doing and that was playing football before I made the full transition to basketball. Everybody says football is tough and stuff which I don't have a knock on it, but I feel like I am a tough player and that is one of the main reasons why I wanted to put myself in this position."
