Smith, Gregg Counties Get Money For New Voting Machines

Smith County got $1.4 million today from the state for new voting machines.

Texas Secretary of State Roger Williams gave Judge Becky Dempsy the check this morning. The grant will cover all the costs associated with the Help America Vote Act which takes effect January first.

"We are thrilled today that we got official word that we got this huge amount of money that is going to pay for the system we have to buy," says Dempsy.

"In Smith County you have more burden in that you operate on punch cards and that is not going to be allowed after January 1st, so your county government has more heavy lifting to do to replace all of them," says Williams.

Gregg County also received a check from the Secretary of State. Gregg County got half a million dollars.
