Some TISD teachers have been reprimanded for mistakenly getting permission from the wrong parent to use corporal punishment on a child. TISD says the Orr Elementary student was taken to the principal's office for misbehaving. But, they say, a mix-up with the parent's name caused them to call the wrong parent, who gave the school permission to punish the child. TISD says it regrets the mistake and is already looking into ways to improve the system.
"When we call to make confirmation, that we have consent from the parent, because it might be similar to someone else's name, is ask for the birth date or ask them what their home address is. Just so you go one step further to validate that you have the right child," says Cody Cunningham, Director of Communications for Tyler Independent School District.
Cunningham also says the correct parent was called immediately after they realized the mistake. She has since met with school officials to address what happened.
