JEFFERSON, TX (KLTV) -

Ahh, the good old days when you could stroll around a country store, get nearly everything you needed, and stop at the counter to have an ice cream or a soda.

Well, actually many of us didn’t really experience that as kids, but there is a place in East Texas where we can, and it’s been ranked as one of the top general stores in the U.S. by Country Living Magazine.

Anna Bode, co-owner of the Jefferson General Store, says the store itself has been around for about 25 years, but the building went up in the 1870’s.

“It was a hardware store for a long time, a riverfront warehouse before that,” Bode said.

And it was an antique store, but they figured there were enough of those in Jefferson.

“We just thought there was a niche to be filled here so that’s what we did,” Bode explained.

Kay Conaway loves working at a store stocked with...well, generally everything.

“There’s a sign for everyone here,” she pointed out. “Have something you played with in the past? Well, it’s probably here."

The store has numerous vintage-style toys, from a sock monkey to a Spam lunchbox. And to wash all that spam down, you can have a seat and a soda, with all kinds of flavors you had as a kid, or maybe never heard of before. And, of course, there’s ice cream.

And if you want dessert after your dessert, well there’s:

“Thousands and thousands of different candies,” Conaway pointed out.

I suspect she means individual pieces of candy, but there is every kind you can think of including some that may not be politically correct: candy cigarettes.

“Are you old enough to buy those?” I asked a customer.

“Yes, I am,” he laughed.

They even have their own pralines. It’s no wonder they were ranked so highly by a national magazine.

“Got ranked with Country living Magazine as one of the top twenty general stores in the nation,” Bode revealed.

Actually they’re ranked number 9, but Anna is modest about her store, although she thinks it’s generally just not a visit to Jefferson without slowing down and spending some time in the past lane.
