Driver Busted With 173 Pounds Of Marijuana

Late Thursday afternoon police stopped a Chevy Suburban on Interstate 20, near the Harvey Road exit. Secretly stashed inside the vehicle: 173 pounds of marijuana. It was stored in a compressed form. The blocks of marijuana were welded into metal boxes, which were then welded into the gas tank of the SUV. Investigator Mark waters with the Precinct 5 Constables Office made the stop. He says the nervous driver and the tampered-with gas tank made him suspicious.

"I brought the vehicle back to our office and the gas tank was removed and after several hours of cutting and welding we removed the boxes and they contained 173 pounds of highly compressed, green marijuana," says Waters.

45-year-old Alberto Martinez is charged with second degree felony possession of marijuana. He told officials he was from Tucson, Arizona and was transporting the marijuana to Birmingham, Alabama.
