The Canton Eagles have experienced a turnaround in the past two years, a change in fortune than came with the hiring of Gary Kinne.
Canton was Kinne's first head coaching job, after being linebackers coach and then defensive coordinator at Mesquite high school. He built the offense around a spread formation, and installed his son G.J. as quarterback as a freshman. The results were immediate.
The team went from 3-7 to a 7-3 playoff team, and won a first round game for the first time in 39 years. G.J. Kinne was all-state his sophomore year.
Kinne played his college ball at middle linebacker for Baylor, where he was All-Southwest Conference.
As head coach, Kinne is 16-6 and his two seasons. Only once before has Canton ever won that many games over a two-year span.
