Canton High School Shooting Suspect In Custody

Canton High School Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Gary Joe Kinne was shot in the chest at the Canton High School at 9:20 a.m. Thursday morning at the athletic field house. He was care-flighted to Trinity Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler. A spokesman for the hospital in Tyler confirms with KLTV that Canton High School Football Coach Gary Joe Kinne was in critical condition as of 7 PM Thursday night.

Kinne has been Athletic Director and Head Football Coach of Canton High School since 2003. This is his first head coaching job. He came from Mequite High School in 2003 where he was a defensive coordinator. His son, "G.J.," is a sophmore at Canton High School and the team's lead quarterback.

All school campuses in Canton ISD were immediately put under lockdown. Schools in Van, Lindale and Tyler ISDs were also under lockdown.

The suspect in the shooting is 45-year-old Jefferey Doyal Robertson.  About two hours after the shooting, his vehicle was found near Garden Valley Golf Course on County Road 422 in Smith County.  Robertson was found an hour later about a mile down the road.  He had an injury to his wrists. Police say it was self-inflicted cuts to his wrists.

Robertson was released from the hospital a little after 5:30 PM Thursday evening. He has now been booked into the Van Zandt County Jail. He is expected to be charged with felony assult with a deadly weapon. Authorities tell us more charges are pending.
