Thousands Gather To Pay Final Respects To Commissioner Don Pinkerton

Thousands said goodbye to a longtime East Texas leader Wednesday.  Funeral services for Don Pinkerton were held at Marvin United Methodist Church.

Pinkerton, a Smith County Commissioner, died from an apparent heart attack Saturday evening. Community leaders, family and friends filed into the church to honor Don's memory. Those who attended say it was "standing room only" inside the church.

Friends who have known him for years say it was a fitting ceremony for a kind and caring man.

"I think it was absolutely reverent but a very joyous goodbye," said Judge Cynthia Kent. "I think Pastor Dent said it all when he said that Don Pinkerton was a good and faithful servant in ever aspect of his life. Smith County will miss him, but we know he's with his father."

Don Pinkerton was buried in a private ceremony.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to organizations Pinkerton cared deeply about. Those include the Salvation Army, Hospice of East Texas, Prevent Blindness Texas and the Marvin UMC endowment fund.
