Gift of Love: Devin, Teenager Praying For New Family

Devin is a polite, well mannered young man. He can be quiet at times. "I like to talk except when I'm in places where I hardly know anybody," says Devin.

This 16 year old likes to play football, take walks and, most of all, go to church. "It's like a feeling that you get when you're right there listening to the songs and everything it makes you feel happy and stuff. I like singing in the choir, too."

This foster child is considered a leader in his church. Among his many duties, he's an usher. "I'm praying for people, taking fans to the people in the choir, a lot of stuff. I also clean up at the church."

Devin's faith is helping him deal with his past. He has been in and out of foster and group homes since he was 7 years old. "A lot of his problems stem from his family and being chaotic in the home and that just came through in the child," says Suzan Doherty, Child Protective Services caseworker.

Devin says, "Basically, I didn't know how to control my temper. I've calmed down a lot."

For a time, his grandmother took care of him. He remembers what she used to tell him. "She would say, 'If you can't handle something in your mind take it to God and place it at his feet.' I try to do that often. And, she would always say, "If there is anything I can do for you, just let me know.'"

His grandmother passed away in 1998. "I miss her a lot. I think about her often. She changed me a lot," says Devin filling with emotion.

Devin is tenderhearted and tries to help others when ever possible. He would like to have siblings again someday. "I'd like there to be other kids so I can be a role model for people in their family."

Devin is ready to shift gears and continue on a positive course. He needs a family to help him through the many losses he's endured. He also needs extra attention with school work. Devin has a lot of potential and with the right environment, his future has no bounds.

Suzan says, "He's a very likable young man."

Devin is hoping his prayers for the Gift of Love will soon be answered. "I would love to have a new family."
