EAST TEXAS (KLTV) - Cool breezes, panoramic views and traditions from a by-gone era, are all part of the draw to Lake Tyler Petroleum Club.
The Lake Tyler Petroleum Club was built in 1949 and it was associated with the Petroleum Club downtown.
In the petroleum club's heyday, the combination of downtown dining and lakeside pleasure couldn't be beat in all of East Texas. But when downtown clubs began closing throughout the country, thanks to the popularity of new upscale restaurants, Tyler's downtown clubs bit the dust as well.
Even though the Lake Tyler Petroleum Club remained open, it was only used by its few club members, until Mike and Donna Clements bought the property eight years ago.
"My husband and I have always just loved the lake, and whenever the opportunity came to buy this place, it was just easier than having a lake lot and keeping it up," said Donna Clements.
Donna admits she hadn't planned on turning the club into a business, but after staging her daughter's wedding here, she began to see all kinds of possibilities.
"My daughter, my youngest daughter Abby, got married out here a little more than three years ago," she said.
Abby's wedding was just the inspiration Donna needed.
"It was at that time, I decided that I might want to take part in this," she explained.
Donna heads up a staff of seven, which includes a general manager, three event managers, a property manager and wedding coordinator.
"We do a lot of really beautiful weddings and anniversary parties," said Donna. "We do a lot of company events. It's a great place for corporate picnics."
The 9000 square-foot harbor landing building can accommodate up to 250 people. The panoramic views on three sides makes it a special setting for events.
Lakeside, designed by the architects responsible for the HGTV Dream Home on Lake Tyler, was built in 2008.
Six cabins, a marina and a swimming pool make the property irresistible.
"I think the most special part is the lake," Donna said.
Of course, as Donna has said from the beginning, the beauty of Lake Tyler makes it the star of every event.
The Lake Tyler Petroleum Club is located on the tip of a peninsula on the northwest shore of Lake Tyler. Tours of the facility are available by appointment.
