There's a small yellow building in Palestine on Oak Street that, if you're not looking for it, may go unnoticed when you drive by. What's inside, though, is worth stopping for, according to locals.
The Villalobos family owns and runs Taqueria San Luis, which began three years ago as a walk-up taco stand sort of eatery. However, Flor and Clemente Villalobos decided to buy the building on Oak Street when it became available, and now their faithful customers can come inside and either order at the counter and walk out, or sit and enjoy the food inside the simple, cozy space.
Flor and Clemente's daughter, Sandra Lara, shared some details about the small eatery, telling us first of all, about the food.
"Everything is fresh and made right in our kitchen," she said. "The recipes are my mom's and dad's. She has always been a good cook, and he has always been in the restaurant business."
Their abilities to cook great food seem apparent when you see the steady stream of people, many of them who say they are regulars, coming into the small restaurant.
"We have people who tell us they make sure to stop at our place when they are passing through town, because they're loving the food," Lara added. "Some people come in and expect to have chips and salsa on the table, but we are not that kind of place; we are more authentic, not really Tex-Mex," she said.
Lara said that their biggest seller is their gordita, though their breakfast is popular, too.
And as a man who Sandra Lara said was a regular at the restaurant said, "Anything you get here is good!"
