Tyler Mass For The Pope

A funeral mass was held for the pope this evening in Tyler. Hundreds of East Texans filled the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception to say prayers for and to honor Pope John Paul II.

Tonight Bishop Alvaro Corrada, the bishop of the East Texas Diocese which covers 33 counties and about 60 thousand catholics, also spoke to us about his personal relationship with the pope.

"The holy father always was very much interested in the us and loved them, last time he told me you are from Texas, and I said no, I am from East Texas. He said what's the difference? I said East Texans welcome you with open arms but take their good time to embrace you in acceptance, and he laughed and said that's very good."

Bishop Corrada has asked all East Texas priests to schedule masses in their parishes for the pope. He says you should contact your parish for more information. The Vatican isn't yet mentioning a date for a papal election. By church law, it has to take place within two weeks of the burial.
