Local Boy Scout Leaders Reassure Parents After North Texas Arrest

It's a guilty plea for a former high-ranking Boy Scout official charged with child porn.

61-year old Douglas Smith admitted to receiving and sending sexually explicit pictures of children over the Internet. Sentencing is July 12th, and Smith may receive 20 years in prison. There's no evidence any Boy Scouts were victimized.

But news of the arrest has Boy Scout leaders in East Texas assuring parents their kids are in one of the safest organizations around.

"Less than 1/100th of one percent of all kids involved in scouting have been faced with these kinds of issues, and of course that's admirable.  But, one case is one too many and we're out to do what we can in Boy Scouting to make sure that we have no cases," said East Texas Area Council executive Mike Ballew.

Ballew says the Scouts conduct thorough background checks on all adults who are interested in working with the kids.
