Site Determined for Rice/Owens Relief Campus

We now know where a new elementary school will be built in Tyler -- the one to relieve overcrowding at Rice and Owens Elementaries.

The new campus will go on sixteen acres in the new Cumberland Gap subdivision. That's along Old Jacksonville Highway, north of Gresham. The TISD school board voted Tuesday to buy the land for $74,000.

Plans for the school were released last week, and homes are slated to soon be built around the site, making it a true neighborhood school.

"We've got a lot of growth in the Hollytree area and a little south of there, and we have a lot of growth in the Gresham area. This was kind of right in between both of them," said board president Andy Bergfeld.

TISD now hopes the new campus will be ready in the summer of 2006. That will be in time for the start of the '06-'07 school year.
