Cruise Control Blamed In Fatal Accident

Wet roads, speed and "cruise control" are being blamed for an accident that claimed the life of a Mississippi woman on interstate 20 today. It happened just after noon on I-20 just west of Barber road in Smith county. State troopers say "Mary Hellum" of Mississippi, was westbound when she lost control of her truck, skidded through the median, and crashed headlong into an oncoming 18-wheeler.

The truck landed off the shoulder, and caught fire. Troopers say "Hellum" was dead at the scene. Investigators say the main factor in the accident was that her cruise control was set while driving on the wet road, and as the truck automatically accelerated uphill , she lost control. No one else was injured in the accident.
