Barton was found after her son, Kenneth Barton, was involved in a standoff with law enforcement agencies on Feb. 11 at Highway 31 West and County Road 1238. Her remains were later found on the property.

The sheriff's office released a statement on the autopsy:

"Earlier this morning, the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Science SWIFS in Dallas reported that the preliminary autopsy report of Frances Barton revealed she died from a single gunshot wound to the head. Frances Barton has been positively identified by fingerprints. There is no indication at this time as to the time of death.

Preliminary autopsy results are still pending on Kenneth Brent Barton and will be made available upon their receipt.

An x-ray at the fire scene indicates the goat that was found in the fire debris died as a result of a gunshot to the head as well.

The scene investigation has been completed. Detectives continue to examine evidence which was seized from the scene as the result of the evidentiary search warrant being executed. Additional information will be reported as it becomes available. "

Kenneth Barton was suspected of involvement in the disappearance of his mother, whose body was found in an upright freezer in an outbuilding behind the house. Frances Barton was reported missing three years ago. She was 78 at the time of her disappearance.
