State Basketball Champs Honored With Parade

The season ended two weeks ago on the court in Austin for the Van Vandals, 3A state basketball champions. Wednesday, the good folks of Van struck up the band and rolled out the red carpet for their state champs.

"We've always been a close community," Van resident Stephanie Thompson says. "When something like this happens we all pull together, and show our support."

"There's tons of people out here," former resident Kendra Flores says. "They shut down everything just for the basketball team going to state.'

"One of the special things about it is what fine citizens these kids are," longtime Van resident Jack Kellam explains. "They're fine characters and we're so very proud of that."

And for their conquering Vandals, the tribute seemed a perfect way to wind up their best season ever.

"It's awesome," senior forward Andrew Thompson says. "We didn't think we'd get a parade and everything."

Senior guard Brandon Roberts agrees. "We got our medals on, and it just feels good to be able to go down Main Street and say you're state champs."

The state champs signed one more round of autographs, and the Van Vandals closed the book on their championship season.
