Tyler Officers Being "Armed" With Stronger Weapons

Smith County District Attorney Matt Bingham Tuesday presented the Tyler Police Department with a $10,000 check. The money will be used to purchase 10 Colt AR-15 patrol rifles.

Officials hope this will help officers better defend themselves in situations such as the Smith County Courthouse shooting nearly a month ago.

"The courthouse shooting was a situation that no one expects to have happened, but when it does, officers respond and we want our officers to be protected, to have the equipment to do the job, to protect citizens because that's the bottom line and that's why we're out here," says Police Chief Gary Swindle.

The $10,000 dollar donation comes from forfeiture funds.
