Better East Texas: Lack of diversity among Academy voters

EAST TEXAS (KLTV) -

Actor Will Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, is boycotting the Academy Awards because of the lack of racial diversity in the nominations for the major categories.

It is hard to embrace Smith’s cause because of the personal benefit she has had through her and her husband’s success in the movie industry, but there is a problem.

The vast majority – in fact 93 percent of the Academy voters – are white and again, there are no nominations for any people of color in any of the four acting categories.

Now, the president of the academy, Sheryl Boone Isaacs, who is black, issued a statement expressing her frustration for the nominations. What is perplexing is that this is the second year in a row this has happened. It begs the question, why hasn’t the president been able to affect any change? Now perhaps revising the membership takes time but Isaacs has offered nothing as to what has been done or is already in motion – just that it is time to act.

This membership issue is something that needs to be addressed but the only thing being expressing currently is frustration and there has been plenty of time for action. And boycotts without a plan are worthless.

So, again, it is hard to feel much sympathy for many in Hollywood but imbalances need to be address so perhaps Isaacs or someone else with the authority to change the makeup of the Academy will act. Otherwise, I guess we’ll miss the Smiths at the Oscars.
