Better East Texas: Curbing gun violence

EAST TEXAS (KLTV) - Recently President Barack Obama announced a new executive action that will place new requirements on gun sellers and purchasers.

The decision was met with great emotion on both sides of this issue. I believe the one thing that all citizens can agree on is that we need to do everything we can to curb gun violence. But in reality, this is not something that legislation nor executive actions will have much impact on.

Sure, this new action by the president will impact those that purchase and sell at gun shows and on–line – which are generally law abiding people. But it will have little or no impact on criminals that will not be going to Academy or some other retailer or even a gun show to purchase a firearm for a criminal action. This executive action may – may - prevent someone who is mentally unstable from purchasing a gun but that is a big may.

On this point, I really can't blame the president for trying but this executive action will be challenged in court and even if it stands up, it truly won't have much impact on the reduction of gun violence.

The root of the problem is that segments of our society have been raised to believe that guns are a solution to life's problems or are at the very least an option for settling disagreements, and that is warped thinking.

In the end, gun control is a responsibility of our culture to instill proper respect for our fellow man – with gun violence not being an option – and that will make for a Better East Texas.
