LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - A Longview couple is facing child abuse charges after their 2-year-old child died from injuries suffered from apparent abuse.
Longview police were called around 1:09 a.m. Wednesday to the Contessa Inn on South Highway 31 after they received a call that a child may be injured in one of the rooms. When officers arrived, they discovered the mother of the 2-year-old had already taken her to the hospital.
When officers arrived at the Good Shepherd Medical Center, they found an unresponsive child being cared for by medical staff. Police say the girl was flown by helicopter to Dallas due to the severity of her injuries. On Saturday, three days after she was taken to the hospital, the 2-year-old girl died.
Police began questioning the girl's parents, who provided a story that was not consistent with the girl's injuries. The mother, identified as Jamie Nelson, admitted to police that she was worried about her daughter's well-being and called a family member. The original welfare call police received was from the same family member.
Nelson, 24, of Winona, was arrested and charged with abandoning/endangering a child by omission or felony criminal negligence. Aaron Bowling, 26, of Longview, was also arrested, charged with injury to a child with intent to commit serious bodily injury.
Longview police will continue investigating the cause of the girl's death.
